In Need of Support?

It’s funny how God works. I never thought that I would be a support group member. A leader, yes, but a member, no. Then I heard a still small voice ask me,"How can you tell other women to go get support if you won't go when you need it?" Off I went.

On the first day, I arrived a little early to help ease my nervousness. In rolled a young woman in a wheelchair. As we talked, for some reason I thought we had met before. She reminded me of the person I prayed for four years earlier after I read her story in the newspaper. So, I asked her. Wow! Another surprise! We had indeed become acquainted through my prayers four years prior to our meeting.

Within moments, in rolled the other support group members. I felt a little awkward because I was the only one without a cane or wheelchair. Although I have a 35% disability, it can't be readily seen. It didn't matter, I figured they would know that I was there because I needed help.

Immediately, I liked the spirit of the group. Anne, Melanie, Carol, Nita and the others were positive and upbeat. That eased my fears because I wouldn't have been able to handle a poor pitiful me session. I knew I had found a refuge, a source of help to spur me on.

Through loss of limbs, paralysis and a variety of other physical challenges, mostly acquired later in life, these women gave me hope that I too could overcome. Even their mobility equipment seemed to speak to me. The wheelchairs said, "Sometimes you need a push." The canes remarked, "At times you need to lean," and the artificial limbs mentioned, "Other feet and hands may at times need to help you."

Without a doubt, God had made his point. I had found the value of support. I encourage you if you need help for one of life's challenges find a support group. Let others lift your broken wings. Like me, I think you will be glad you took the step!
