True Thanksgiving Food #386

When we celebrate Thanksgiving, we indulge ourselves. The food issumptuous. The deserts are scrumptious. Our sides ache. We loosen ourbelts and look for a place to rest, from eating. "That's real food," wesay.

It may be real food, but is it true food? What's the difference? Look atwhat Jesus Christ tells us. "My flesh is true food, and My blood is truedrink" (John 6:55). How can this be? Thanksgiving dinner is real food allright but it can also be false food. That is, if we put all our eggs inthe material food basket, we will come up short in the end. What is thetrue bread? "This is the bread which came down out of heaven; not as thefathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live forever" (John6:58).

Real food, that turkey dinner for example, points to the true food fromheaven, Jesus Christ. We partake of His flesh and blood when we trust inHis sacrifice as the only adequate payment for our sins. We then havereal life. We may die physically. We will never die eternally. Thepilgrim fathers and mothers gave thanks to God for the provision of realfood in the new world. They also gave thanks to God for Jesus Christ, thetrue food He gave them.
