Gifts

Sarah was a writer who offered to her friend, Brad, a place in a book she wasworking on. Writing was a small part of Brad's career as well, and sinceSarah had been inspired by some of Brad's works, she assumed her offer toplace some of Brad's works in her book would be a blessing to him. Instead,Brad's reaction caught Sarah by surprise. "Oh no! My gift is not in writing, but music," Brad exclaimed.

Brad was indeed a highly skilled musician whose music touched the hearts ofall who heard him offer this gift of song, but in Sarah's opinion, Brad wasbeing far too modest in recognizing his writing as another gift from God.

Sarah went on to finish her book, but she still felt a sense of wasted talentwhenever she thought of Brad's words.

Each of us has been given a particular talent, and it is our job to rootthese gifts out and develop them to their fullest potential. In my view, suchtalents are a gift from God, and they can be used, both for our personalenjoyment, the pleasure of others, and the revealing of our Creators majesty!

It is not up to us to determine if our gift matches up to the standards ofothers, but to ask our self if this particular talent has bore any positivefruits in the life of others. In the above scenario, not only was Sarahblessed numerous times by Brad's so-called modest outpourings, but so weremany others in the community. For all Brad knows, God could be calling on himto develop this gift more, not leading him to hide it away.

There are times in my life I feel a need to slow downmy pace, thus, I lay back, relax, and put on a soothing piece of music. Aseach fiber of my being loosens and calms, it is as if I am encountering aspiritual experience of sorts, because there is something unique andunexplainable about the music that has reached to my very core, both stirringme, and bringing me to a place of inner harmony. Suddenly, the worries thatseemed so overwhelming, no longer seem so huge. The beauty of the musicsomehow changes my vision, and everything around me seems lovelier.

I thank God for the gifts of others, because it is only when others sharetheir gifts that we can be blessed! Thank God for the musician whose musichas a healing effect on my soul!

Just as libraries have shelves of books of varying sorts, and it would beextremely difficult, if not impossible, for all people to agree which was thebest novel, so too, should we not measure our own personal gifts against thegifts of others. As one person may prefer nonfiction, and another one whosepreference is science fiction, so does God provide a way for each individualto be touched by the mediums that move him most. Each book in the library isvaluable to someone!

Gifts should not be wasted, but more importantly, our relationship with Godshould not be placed on the back burner either. It is never to late todevelop a gift, and it is never to late to reach out and make a relationshipwith our heavenly Father.
