The Pearl Queen and the Dove

Once upon a time there was a beautiful castle. It stood high on a cliff above the ocean, on an island all to itself. The waves would roll high and crash onto the rocks below. This was very peaceful to the Queen who lived there. Her kingdom was spread out on the mainland and the two places were connected by a magnificent bridge.

Mostly the inhabitants fished or raised sheep. The quality of the wool was known all over the world and everyone enjoyed a nice garment or blanket from Oceanana. But mostly they wanted the pearls. Everyone loved the pearls from Oceanana.

The Queen was most fond of her pearls. She always, in fact, wore pearls... always. When the divers would find a most lovely pearl, they would present it to the Queen, much to her delight.

All the men in the kingdom loved the Queen because she was very beautiful. She would stand on the terrace of her palace and look over at the city. The sun would dance and glisten on the pearls strung in her long red-gold hair. All the people would wave to her and she would wave back. Some days the Queen would come to the city and cut off a pearl from her hair to give to a stranger. For some reason when the Queen wore the pearls they would take on a special glow and when people would hold them they would always feel a sensation of love, so the ones worn by her were greatly sought after.

Even though the Queen was capable of bestowing love to others through her pearls, she was lonely. This was a secret she never told anyone. She did not want to upset anyone, or cause them to pity her.

The Queen had a high tower with a room in the shape of a star. In the night she would go to her starlight room and talk to the Creator. Sometimes she would ask why she was so lonely but he never told her. He would talk to her about other things, but not that. So finally she just accepted her fate and did not complain.

The Queen would call for great parties and street fairs to be held. She would attend all the festivities hoping to gain some measure of peace and love, but she never did. She would call for the palace musicians to hold many merry concerts. But the merry feeling did not invade her lonely heart. She would often ask other people if they had found love, and they would relate exciting stories of undying bliss.

One day the Queen noticed a ship sailing on the waves towards her kingdom. She sent her royal soldiers to inquire about its presence. When they returned, they informed her majesty that its Captain was on a quest. He was on a search for love.

Since the Captain was a nice, personable gentleman, she was delighted to share some of her sweet pearls with him.

Her delight turned to concern when he said he felt no such love or pleasant feeling from her famous pearls. "How strange," said the Queen. I cannot think why you don't, for it has always been that way. I am sorry. Please feel free to stay and enjoy my kingdom anyway. I hope you have a nice stay."

"I have looked everywhere for love and this was my last hope, remarked the Captain, I too am sorry." But yes, I will accept your kind offer and stay for a while in your charming city by the sea."

When he left, the palace the Queen felt even more filled with despair. Now even her wonderful pearls were not working. That evening, when she stood in the starlight room for her talk with the Creator, she sighed. "My dear God even though I have been very lonely, I was at least able to give love to those I met."

"Really," answered the Creator. "Did you?"

This was very startling to the Queen. "Well, yes. Haven't you heard of the great love my pearls cause? I've even heard of people feeling well after being sick."

"Your pearls cause love, my little Queen, because the people that receive them love you. If you want to feel love, my child, then you must give it, not receive it"

"But I was afraid it would not be returned."Then the Queen noticed an undulating glow in the sky. The Creator told the Queen he was going to take her away to a distant land. The Queen rose high in the air, above the city, to a land with a pink sky. She was taken to a place of great beauty.

Almost all the Angels of heaven were in praise to God. God was on the throne, but she could not see his face. There was a bright glowing ball covering it. From the center of the ball there was something forming. At first she couldn't distinguish what it was. It twisted and turned in the most graceful way imaginable. Nothing could be more graceful. "What is it?" her mind wondered. Now it had wings. As its forming completed, she could see it was a dove. Soft and sweet, its movement was mesmerizing. Then the one became thousands, then millions. Each dove carrying a ribbon and then dropping it on each Angel's head. As the ribbons were falling they turned into a glowing heart that entered their bodies. Then the heart would grow until it was on the outside, and the Angel was on the inside. The Angels begin to cry and moan in ecstasy. They put their heads in their hands then raised their heads up again. The joy, the peace, the love was unbearable. Now the Creator spoke to the Queen. "You ask everyone about love. But you failed to ask Love itself. Love me."

"I will," replied the Queen. Now the Dove of Love dropped a ribbon on the Queen and she too found love.
