The Sun, The Moon, The Stars, A Little Bag, and Socks

Logan was spending the weekend with us and I was excited about being Grandma-and-Sunday-School teacher for my little grandson.

"Logan," I began, "a long, long time ago, there were no trees, or animals, or people on the earth. Did you know that?"

"Uh-huh," he said, and of course he did. This wasn't the first time in his three years of life on earth he'd heard this story, just the first time he'd heard it in my Sunday School class. I was finding it not so easy to separate Grandma and Sunday School teacher. "Well, the Bible says that God made the sun and the moon and the stars." Opened on the table before us was the Catherine Marshall Bible Story Book I'd found at a flea market, with beautiful artwork in it, drawn by children. "Can you draw me a picture of the sun and moon and stars?" I asked. Logan picked up a crayon and got started. The first little thing he drew looked sort of like a quarter moon. Sort of. I thought I'd better ask to be sure. "What's that, honey?" I asked Logan.

"A little bag," he said, in a tone that made it clear that the little bag was no mistake. It had not started out to be the moon, and somewhere along the line became something else. The little bag had started out to be a little bag, and that's what it became. About all I could say was "Oh" and smile, and go on with the story about creation. Logan was drawing a something else while I talked.

"What's that, darling?"

"A sock, Grandma," my grandson said with just a hint of impatience in his voice. Wasn't it obvious what that little thing was?

"Sweetie, I thought you were going to draw pictures of the sun and the moon and the stars that God made," I said.

Logan laid his crayon down and looked up at me and then he became the SundaySchool teacher.

"Grandma, God made little bags and socks, too."

Well, He sure did.

I went on with the story while Logan made long red and purple stripes on a sheet of yellow construction paper.

After the stripes were drawn, Logan sat and thought a minute or two and I just observed. I knew something important was happening, but I didn't know what.

Finally, he chose a blue crayon and his big blue fish with red and purple stripes was born. I didn't ask any questions and Logan seemed satisfied that his Grandma finally was beginning to understand things. He'd had a lot of patience with me, and I sure appreciated that.

You see, first, God made the sun, the moon, and then the stars, then little bags, and socks. Then He made beautiful red and purple stripes and built a lovely blue fish around them. End of story.
