Gotta Cross O'er the Jordan

Crossing bridges has always been a fascination. Viewing the water farbelow or close below is exhilarating. In Elmira we crossed a coveredbridge made so that horses would not be frightened with the water below.

An article a few years back caught my attention: Sydney Bridge Climb. Itshowed pictures of how people can actually climb this Australian bridgefor a fee of $100 to get a kookaburra's eye view of beautiful Sydney andthe harbour far below. Sixteen people died while building thisworld-famous bridge.

About the same time this bridge was under construction in the 1930's,Joseph B. Strauss was seriously taking on the project of the Golden GateBridge in California at $30 million. This was also a major undertaking. The concrete alone could make a 5' sidewalk from New York to SanFrancisco. The wire used could encircle the earth 3 times. One pier waslocated 100 feet below the ocean surface and the length of this bridge was8981' while the Sydney Bridge was a mere 3792 feet.

As well, Strauss was very concerned about the lives being lost as theytoiled in the hot sun, the driving 60-100 mph wind with a 27' bridge swaythe salty, foggy mist that often would envelop the work site, and thewater far below. How could he safely build a suspension bridge, knownthen as, 'the bridge that could not be built'?

A Safety Net

The Golden Gate Bridge, one of the seven modern building wonders of theworld, has an interesting fact about the actual construction: 11 soulswere lost compared to the 16 who died during the Sydney Bridge project. What saved many men, 19 in total, was the safety net Strauss created. Thehumor of that day: the safety net was called the "Half-Way-to-Hell Club."Rightly so for the San Francisco Bay, 220' below, has strong oceancurrents.

Bridges, an avenue to reach to the other side. It can be as wide as theSydney Bridge which has 8 car lanes and 2 railroad lines. Or it can beone lane that carries only a horse-drawn wagon. At unique times in ourlives, each one of us loves a bridge to cross. Perhaps it is a bridgeover troubled waters. We yearn to reach the other side for safe havens, calm breezes, warm waters. Yet, we all have to cross over the Jordan, asthat spiritual song goes. God, in His own soft way, beacons each one totake His bridge, the cross. We do not have to climb this bridge, but justsimply cross over. God has placed a special safety net for us and this isthe cross that His Son, Jesus Christ died on. Almost sounds too simple,I know. Yet, this good Shepherd, wants to cradle you in His arms. That is what Daily Wisdom is all about, creating a bridge between you andyour Creator. Why not ask for more information? Contact us today.
