The Gospel of Rap and Rock #131

A casual review of the jackets on popular tape and CD albums reveals two things. Sex and violenceare two of the main dishes on the menu. Concern has been voiced in the media and by government officials over explicit sex in the lyrics of popular rock and rap. And believe it or not, there are religious overtones. "Madonna" is a good example. She extols the pleasures of lust on CD's and in videos. And she bares all on the slick printed page: "Madonna" in the Nude! More concern should be registered over this "pop porn." Why? It's portrayed as wholesome.

A professor I recently heard says Madonna is probably the best example of someone reading contemporary culture and taking advantage of it. This is a scary proposition. The pun intended. Millions of young adults are being propositioned and seduced by sex and pleasure. When this gospel is so well packaged, the pleasure seekers of today are beguiled. They can't comprehend the morning after. And they refuse to accept the big morning after at the end of life.

This same professor suggests Christians need to take a lesson from Madonna. Not that we need to use her tactics. But we do need to understand our society as well as she does. And we need to present the Good News of Christ just as persuasively.
