Palm Fronds

The palm trees are everywhere in Florida, and with the windy weather we had experienced on a recent vacation, their fronds were surely blowin' in the breeze. With Palm Sunday next week, I was thinking about that day, many years ago, when Jesus rode into Jerusalem as I viewed these green branches waving in the wind. The day which we call Palm Sunday was originally "Lamb Selection Day", the day when Jewish families chose the lamb with which they would celebrate Passover. I have always associated these fronds with the traditional word, "Hosanna!", thinking this was a shout of praise. Recently I learned that hosanna has another meaning- "save us; deliver us!" The crowd that day was crying, "save and deliver us"- looking for someone to drive out the hated Romans and bring freedom. On that Lamb Selection Day so many years ago, Jesus did not ride into the city on a mighty stallion, but humbly on the back of a donkey. He did not save the people from the Romans as they had wished, but instead, saved us from our sinful nature. He gave us victory, not in the physical, but in the spiritual realm, by giving us life over death for all who asked. He was the deliverer; the savior- and He brought freedom to the world. What a redeemer He is! Be sure to thank Him today.
