Recognition

Like all grandfathers, I love to watch my grandchildren at play. One day children are concentrating on trying to take their first step, and, before we know it,they have the command of their growing bodies to run and jump, ride a bicycle, hit a baseball, dive into a pool and perform on stage.

As I watch my grandchildren play, it's natural for them to try to get my attention and acknowledgement. One day at the pool, it struck me that as each of them dove or went down a slide, they would call out, "Watch me, grandpa!" And as they grow up, they long for me to watch them get good grades, play in bands, act in plays and go off to college. You've surely noticed this in your own children and grandchildren.

"Watch me!" Children long for someone they love to watch them and offer an approving smile or words of encouragement. Probably the most powerful thing we can say to our kids is, "I love you, and I'm proud of you." But "Watch me" is not just for kids. We long for recognition all our lives.

Behind a lot of hard work is a simple desire to be recognized as the best in our profession, be given a more impressive job title, win an award or see our name in the paper. Everyone appreciates a pat on the back, a thank you note, a word of encouragement, a compliment.

I learned quickly in business to appreciate the power of recognizing achievement and how unrecognized achievement kills incentive. Only saints toil for long in anonymity.

God has created each one of us as a unique individual with our own talents and dreams. He's instilled in each of us an awareness that we’re special and are here for a purpose. Recognition encourages our God-given desire to do our best.

So, when your children do something that makes you proud, let them know. If employees or co-workers do a great job, tell them so. Thank volunteers. Let others know if you've appreciated their service or enjoyed their performance.

Recognizing the achievements of others is recognition of the beauty of God's creation in each person. Recognition helps all of us work toward the potential of our God-given talents and fulfill His purpose for our lives.
