A Day to Keep#096

Are weekends for beer and parties? Not really. Weekends are for folks like you and me. You probably enjoy your weekends. You enjoy time off from work and a break from the Monday through Friday grind. Amazingly enough, this confirms God's plan for you. You see, God's plan includes at least one day of rest out of every seven. During that day you are to rest from your regular work. You are also to take a break from your usual recreational activities. God has given you six days each week to accomplish your work at the office and at home. When God completed all His work of creation, "He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done" (Genesis 2:2). So you are to follow God's example. But when you take time off from your work and recreations, you are not to be idle. You are to take up another very special duty. Yes, God rested on the seventh day. But "Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it" (Genesis 2:3). In other words, God set aside one day in seven to be a day of rest and worship. The early Christians took this very seriously. They regularly met for worship on the first day of the week. They called the first day of every week the "Lord's Day" (Revelation 1:10) because Christ was raised from the dead on the first day of the week. So you too are called to a day of rest and worship each week. You should also take this seriously and follow what the Bible has to say in Hebrews 10:24-25, "Let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some."
