What Sound Is That?

I Kings 19:12 There was an earthquake and a fire, but the Lord was not in them. Then Elijah heard the voice of God in the sound of a gentle whisper.The sounds of construction were everywhere.Key Colony Beach in Marathon, Fla. was a growing neighborhood, and new houses were being built all around us. Other noises pushed into play- lawn mowers, weed eaters, boat motors and wave runners made noise, noise, noise. As I sat on the porch of my sisters' home, I tried to block out the noise around me. One sound invaded my soul, however, and it was so pleasant.

There must have been a church nearby, for the bells of a hymn resounded in the air. They seemed to obliterate all the other sounds, as the melody was one I was familiar with. How I enjoyed hearing something which was beautiful to my ears, despite the everyday sounds of this area.It was a wake up call for me…. "Marion, be aware of God's voice in the everyday of life. You don't have to go to a retreat or be in a church service to hear Him speak to you."Each of us has many opportunities to hear God's voice- if not in the chimes of a church bell, then perhaps in a word of encouragement from a friend, a smile from a clerk, or a hug from a child or a loved one. God speaks to us in so many ways... let's pray He'll open our spiritual ears to hear each gentle whisper He sends our way. Listen! Do you hear Him speaking to you today? He is, you know.
