We the People

I was honored to be part of the grand opening of the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia on the Fourth of July. In the birthplace of the U.S. Constitution, America finally has the first museum in the world dedicated to honoring and explaining that amazing document. When it was signed, the phrase "We the people" was born.

Amid the waving of red, white and blue; bands playing; speeches; and all the other hoopla, I felt proud. I was proud to be one of the people, richly blessed to live in freedom. I felt that same sense of pride that goes back to reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in school, coming home victorious from World War II, or singing the National Anthem before a game.

Some might feel patriotism is old fashioned today. But I believe it’s time for Americans – for "we the people" – to embrace our God-given blessings, our country, and patriotism. It’s time to celebrate the United States of America. Let’s enthusiastically honor opportunity, applaud success, and glorify freedom without hesitation.

God has given America fruits of prosperity far beyond our founders’ imaginations. Americans enjoy more freedoms, more wealth, a higher standard of living, and more advances in science and technology than any nation in history. In just over 225 years we’ve given birth to some of the greatest citizens, inventions, breakthroughs, and opportunities in the history of civilization. Our country offers freedom to all who come looking for it based on our conviction that freedom is our God-given right.

We’re a work in progress and not perfect. But if we believe in liberty and justice for all, and in the power of our free enterprise system, we must thank God and preserve the intent of the men who started this bold experiment and fought and died for the freedoms in our Constitution.
