Before You Marry

In some regard, marriage is a like a business.Consider for a moment, two attorneys involved in a legal partnership. Each person within that professional pairing has certain responsibilities and duties, and if one of the partners fails to consult the other during a serious turn of events, the lawyer's will most likely lose their case because both weren't fully prepared.

The Bible tells us that once a young man leaves his home and takes on a wife, his greater obligation will be to his wife and family. The following verse relays that if a husband is cleaving on to his wife as God desires, he will no longer answer solely for his own needs, but those of his wife as well.

"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh." (Gen. 2:24)

So close a bond, in fact, that they will no longer be considered two, but one.

With all this presumed unity and closeness, why is the sacred institution of marriage slowly crumbling, thus causing divorce rates to escalate? The answer is disobedience.

We know that marriage is serious business, and a life-time commitment, but how many people do you know who jump quickly in to it without fully thinking things out? What things? Important questions we should be discussing with our prospective spouse such as where will we live, how will we earn our money, will we have children, and if so, how many? The same thing is true with knowing about your potential mates spiritual beliefs, and necessary character traits which will be necessary building blocks to your marriage. Then of course, there is the matter of time and patience. Will you give your dating life enough time so that you can really find out what your partner is made of, or in your excitement will you set this significant issue aside?

As a woman who has been married nineteen years to a wonderful man, I can tell you that a good and lasting marriage is not something that just happens; it requires actual work. And, just as life has its twists and turns, so too does marriage have its highs, lows, and bumps along the way.

While marriage is a special bond which must be pondered extensively before it is entered upon, there is another relationship which is equally important; our communion with God. Unlike choosing a spouse, it is impossible to run too quickly in to the arms of the Lord!
