Unraveling the Knitting

Isaiah 42:23 Apply the lessons you’ve learned from the past. Each stitch had been cast on the needles, counted carefully. Now, the pattern would begin.Following directions, I knitted row upon row, working upon my project.Unfortunately, after many rows, I disregard the direction book, thinking I had the pattern set in my mind. It took several more rows before I looked at my piece of work to see something had gone askew. The pattern was off by a couple of stitches, and the entire piece was now wrong. I had to remove the stitches and unravel the rows of hours of work. It was a painstaking ordeal for me for much time and effort had been spent in this piece. Each time I pulled the yarn, and the stitch was removed, it was an “ouch” to me. Soon I was ready to start again. I replaced the stitches on the needle, now paying very close attention to the instruction book. I would check my pattern on every row- seeing if all lined up with the instructions. Finally, the piece was finished- beautifully, I think! Amazing how a knitting project can be completed to perfection when one follows the book of instruction.

Likewise, God has given His people an instruction book. We know it is the Bible. When we follow His directions, our life should stay in His pattern for us, but sometimes things go wrong. Tattered relationships, compulsions, emotional upheavals or fear and doubt can get us off His plan by a stitch or two. They can wreck a marriage. Then the overall pieces of life are out of kilter according to His plan. Healing starts with the unraveling, and painful as it may be. Issues must be faced and removed, just as my knitting had been. It is only then we can begin to rework our “piece of life”, knowing the finished product will be much better than when we had even started it--- remembering to follow God’s handbook each and every day, applying His Word to our lives.
