God's Humor

I have for quite some time enjoyed reading the funnies page in my local paper on a daily basis. Sometimes it is the only thing I read of the entire paper, mostly because I get so depressed reading about war in Iraq, genocide in Africa, droughts in the mid-west etcetera etcetera. The other reason, is that comic strips, like art, imitate life in a lot of ways. I recently read one that had one of the regulars on the strip reading the word universe and then the definition was "a song with one verse." On the outside it was cute and funny, but I thought about a few things that take it a little deeper.

1) If there was one song to sum up the whole universe, and it had only one verse, what would it say? Personally I hear holy is the lord, over and over again, and I do not think I would ever get tired of it.

2) The word root uni means one. The universe is a place for one God, the God you and I have the pleasure of serving every day, and then one day meeting. The very term universe would seem to point the fact that there is only ONE God. In this day and age that is a hard thing for non believers to come to terms with.

3) At the bottom left of the comic strip there is the name of the publisher, in this case Creators Syndicate is who publishes the one I was reading. What a coincidence. The Creators Syndicate (God in this case) created the universe and in all the noise in this world, and other worlds, all come together to say one thing HOLY IS THE LORD.

I have a real hard time believing as some do that we are a great cosmic accident. Look around you, go to your local zoo (not my house please) and just look at the wondrous varieties of animals, plants, and people your see. All this is by grand design. Yet others believe there is a God, who wound us up like a clock, and let us go out own way. NOPE. A verse that is probably familiar from our childhood days in Vacation Bible School, John 3:16 says "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever shall believeth in him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life." A God who sent his only son to die for me loves me a whole lot more then a God who just winds up the clock, and the leaves.

When you have a second, (now would be good) stop, listen, I bet you hear something. Something or someone saying HOLY IS THE LORD. Next time someone says something to you out of spite or anger, say I agree, the Lord is holy. I would love to see the reaction you get.
