Personal Gifts
Those who know Ben well surprised him with items for his hobbies, and things he likes. They were personal, chosen just for Ben. Like the Baby Ruth candy bars, the tie in his favorite colors, the fishing reel. When I was a teenager, and it came time to buy a present for a boy, my mom would advise, "Don't get anything too personal now! It's not appropriate." I was chuckling as her words came back to me. Anymore, what could be too personal? With so many family members now, I began shopping for Christmas gifts a bit earlier than usual this year. Each holiday season, I try to come up with just the right gift for each person on the list. I have many lists to help me keep in mind each ones individual interest, age, and size, from 10 months to 89 years. Browsing in a catalog, I recalled how, over the years, my family and close friends have planned gifts for me that were precisely what I needed or had been wanting. I treasure how much love and time they have poured into their thoughtfulness for me. Our Father does much the same for each one of us. He plans exactly and precisely what gifts to give to us. Some we receive at birth, like the color of our eyes. Others we receive during our lifetime, like patience. He is the greatest of all gift-givers. Who else could give the incomprehensible gift of love that came wrapped up in a bunch of cloths in an animal feeding trough? For each one of us. It doesn't get much more personal than that.
