Is it really possible to salvage a marriage which is on the rocks? A lot of people think that divorce is the answer. After all, it is a lot easier to bail out of an unhappy marriage than to attempt to save it. Not so says the author of The Case Against Divorce, by Diane Medved. Listen, "Divorce itself inevitably changes you - it diminishes your moral perspective, staggers you emotionally for months and years...." But, the author points out, "There are some things that, unfortunately, it does not automatically affect: the patterns in your behavior that led to your marital problems in the first place." To put this in Biblical terms, the real problem in a divided household is personal sin. What I mean is that either husband or wife or both are not at peace with God because of sin against the other. So peace within the marriage is impossible. In divorce you may separate from your mate. But what about the patterns in your behavior which led to the divorce. These sinful patterns of behavior will follow you. They will follow you into your next marriage. You see divorce is not the answer. The answer is radical change! Change from the inside out. You know, God has been in the business of changing people on the inside for centuries. The promise of God is very plain. He says, "I will give you a new heart, and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh" (Ezekiel 36:26). When God performs radical heart surgery on you, your life will be changed. Not only so, you will begin to understand what marriage can be all about. So turn to the living God for help in healing your marriage before it is too late.
