A New Beginning

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth (Genesis chapter 1 verse 1). Out of chaos, God created order. When my older son was in the sixth grade, he faced the typical middle school dilemmaof how to get and stay organized. Quite often he would sigh, "If I could just stop the action and have a new beginning, I think I could make it!" His wish brought to my mind several scriptures that illustrate that the God of all creation is a God of new beginnings. The new birth experience - a new life offered through Jesus Christ when we choose to trust Him as Savior and Lord - is a fresh-start miracle in and of itself. "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new" says the Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians chapter 5 verse 17. Through Christ we can have access to the Father as Jesus said in John chapter 14 verse 6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." When we come to the Father in this way, we discover that "God is love" (1 John chapter 4 verse 16), and that love (charity) covers "the multitude of sins" (1 Peter chapter 4 verse 8).

The Old Testament prophet Jeremiah tells us in Lamentations chapter 3 verses 22-23 that God gives us a fresh start every morning. "It is of the Lordís mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning..." Even when we sin, we can have the avenue of a fresh start. John, the best friend of Jesus as He walked on this earth, tells us in 1 John chapter 1 verse 9 (sometimes called the Christianís bar of soap) that "if we confess our sins, [God] is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." The word all means each, every, any, all, the whole, everyone, all things, everything. Through the redemptive work of Jesus by His life, death on the cross and resurrection, we can have access to a clean slate, a new beginning, each every day. The writer of Psalm 51 verse 10 pleads, "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me." And, yes, God is able - He is a God of new beginnings.
