Covered

"God will meet all your needs... " Philippians 4:18-19

"You go in, I got ya covered!" What a great line from the old westerns. I thought of it recently when I was planning to go out of town with my husband. He had a meeting in the Big Apple, city of my birth. I was thrilled to be able to join him.

I wanted to be sure everything was covered before I left. At the office: took care of correspondence. Paid bills. Returned messages. At the house: stopped the paper, and mail. Cleaned out refrigerator, dumped garbage. Checked windows and doors. Notified the neighbors, as well as relatives and friends, where we'd be.

Then the biggie: packing. So many decisions. Sneakers, for daytime walking everywhere. Boots in case it turned cold. Pumps for evening. Jackets, you never know, better take one. Umbrella, yes. Earrings that "match", purse to 'go with everything'. I really wanted to take my comfy robe for relaxing in the hotel room, but there was hardly room in the suitcase. Which magazines, books to take on the plane? Don't forget the cell phone charger.

Yes, I wanted every conceivable situation covered. Holy cow! What an ordeal. It was just for one weekend. I was exhausted before we even left with the details I thought I had to see about.

What I actually needed to think about is the huge difference in wants and needs. Of course we have to use sense when it comes to wanting things, say, on a trip. But to try and cover every eventuality can get you crazy.

Should you really need something, God really will provide it for you. In the 4th chapter of Philippians, St. Paul says, "I am amply supplied.....and my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus." Not some, not a few, all.

Not to worry, as the saying goes. We're covered.
