Violence: Its Results #279

Without doubt, violence causes much physical pain. The brother of a young man, whom I know, belongs to a gang. When gang members were looking for this boy, they went to his house. The boy was not home. Minutes later a gang member began shooting up the house. The boy's father took a bullet in the face. Violence. Pain. But violence also spawns pain of conscience.

A fifteen-year-old boy shot a fourteen-year-old girl. When apprehended, he cried convulsively. The realization of what he had done began to come home to him by means of his conscience. The pain of conscience and of guilt is debilitating. But violence also brings the pain of loneliness. When we commit acts of violence, separation and estrangement are inevitable.

Vincent Foster, a former White House legal counsel, could not handle life in Washington. "Here, ruining people is considered sport," he said. In an effort to escape this violence, he took the step of suicide. This meant final separation from family and friends. The Bible teaches ultimate separation from family and friends takes place in hell. Violence of heart worked out in acts of violence against others is punished by unmitigated physical torment, emotional turmoil and separation from all love and mercy. This will go on forever. It is not pleasant to contemplate.

But violence of heart and the results of violence can be healed. They can be healed by Jesus Christ. The Bible declares that Jesus came into the world to bind up the broken-hearted (Isaiah 61:1). Physical pain, pain of conscience and the pain of loneliness break our hearts. But Jesus Christ comes to bind up the wounds in our broken hearts, caused by violence.
