I Remember Mama

It was a September morning, a long time ago.(I'll not say exactly when.) She held me by the hand and we entered this really big room full of children about my size and a lady Mama was talking to. Mama had let go of my hand so I clung to her skirt and hid behind her. "Surely she wasn't going to leave me here," I thought, but she did. I didn't want to be there, I wanted to be with Mama. That's the safe place where I had always been. But this was a new world for me, called Kindergarten. Life would never be the same.

In a photo album, I have a wonderful picture of her - actually it's of Mama and me together. She is adjusting my veil and I have on a beautiful wedding dress. That day I left her. Oh, I came to see her often and she visited me, but it wasn't the same.

Last September my siblings and I laid Mama to rest beside my Daddy who had passed on ten years before. This time it was really hard to say goodbye to Mama. This time, not only can I not go home from school and find her ironing my clothes and cooking supper, but neither can I go to her house for a visit and eat her cooking and stay up late just visiting either. I can't pick up the phone and hear her voice on the other end saying that she loves me or receive her warm hug when I stop by. No, it never will be the same again.

But, I am comforted because I do know this for sure: I know where my Mama is. She is with God. And, I know for sure that I am going to see her again, and this time we will never have to be apart. And, when we are together the next time, it won't be the same. It will be so much better!
