The Good Savor of Salt - Message 072In one way, the work of the church is like other kinds of work. You get out of it what you put into it. If you expect to experience rewards for working in the church, you must apply yourself. You must be ready to befriend the friendless, help the helpless, teach the dropout and feed the hungry. You must be like James, the brother of Jesus, who said, "Faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself" (James 2:18). You must have "faith working through love" (Galatians 5:6). The Bible promises that you will receive a great reward. "When the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory" (1 Peter 5:4). On the other hand, don't get over confident because you have done a great deal of work in the church. Above all, don't rely upon what you do to capture you a place in heaven. Faith without works may be dead. But works without faith are just as deadly! There is only one path to heaven. As Jesus said, "I am the way" (John 14:6). You must wholly trust in Him! "But," you respond, "what about all my work?" Jesus replies, "When you do all the things which are commanded you, say, `We are unworthy servants; we have done only that which we ought to have done'" (Luke 10:17).
