A Start At Learning Contentment - Message #043

Our children may be out of school and we may be past school age. Learning never stops. Let me give you a good example. We ought to learn contentment. It's pretty hard to do in our society. Greed abounds. TV commercials feed on it. They press us on every side to be dissatisfied without the most popular car, clothes, career and companion. Greed can drive up our blood pressure as we push for more and more of the material goodies of this life. Greed drives us away from family members. Dad is married to his job; Mom's career is top priority. Love wanes. Family ties weaken. What is the cure?

Learning contentment. Listen to the testimony of the apostle Paul. "I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need" (Philippians 4:11-12).

Paul learned contentment by God's grace. It took time. It took effort. It is a learned behavior. He found that he was able to learn contentment with God's help. "I can do all things through Him who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13). How about you? Are you suffering from a lack of contentment in marriage or work?
