Love of a Dog

Today when I took my walk on the beach, I wondered what God would show me about Himself. Each day, as I drank in the beauty surrounding me- the surf, sand, sun and magnificent clouds, God revealed Himself to me in a new and different way.

In the distance I could see a man with his dog. The man had a frisbie he threw for his pet, and I smiled to myself as I watched this animal retrieve the frisby each time it was thrown. The dog just bounded around the man, exuberantly waiting for him to toss it again. The devotion in his manner, the excitement in his step, and the joy in his overall demeanor just bubbled from him.

There are other ways in which a dog may show his unconditional love that remind me of the way God loves His children. My pooch is always happy to see me whether I'm absent from him for a moment or a long period of time. He forgives anything and never holds a grudge. He always thinks that'll look great, no matter what my outfit, my makeup, or whether I am having a bad hair day! He guards the door and is constantly prepared to defend me from any unwelcome intruder. He is always thrilled to go on any errand with me- when I have invited him. He is very despondent when we are apart, but nothing I might do would ever change the way he feels about me.

Truly, each of these seven character traits do apply in respect to God's love for me, and for YOU. He is happy to see us, is forgiving, does not care about outward appearances, guards us, goes with us, misses us when we are absent from Him, and is consistent in His love.
Rev. Warren Keating, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Uma, Arizona says the best prayer he ever heard was:" Lord, please make me the kind of person my dog thinks I am!"

Happily, I know God loves us with an unconditional love and I pray that we may have this same type of love for others- given to me by the power of the Holy Spirit.
