The Image Of God - Message #340What makes a human being a human being? This is a legitimate question. After all, we are unique beings, are we not? But some would have us believe we are nothing more than an extension of the animal world. In fact, the theory of evolution tells us we are animals. There seems to be scientific evidence to this effect. But the faith of the Bible teaches us something entirely different. The Bible tells us we are created by God in His image. This means we not only have bodie,s but we also have souls. The Bible says God "forms the spirit of man within him" (Zechariah 12:1). This soul or spirit is the spiritual element within us. It makes us distinct from the animals. Angels are spirits but they do not have bodies. The angels are "ministering spirits, sent to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation" (Hebrews 2:14). On the other hand, animals have bodies but not souls or spirits. Human beings have both bodies and souls. This is true because we are created in God's image. Because God is a spiritual being, we too are spiritual beings. But what is it about spiritual beings that makes them unique? Well, as spiritual beings, we have minds. As a result, we have the ability to communicate with words. Yes, that's right. We all have minds and the ability to communicate. We can form words and communicate our thoughts. This makes us utterly unique among earthly created beings. In like manner, God communicates His thoughts to us. He does so in the words of the Bible. The result is that when we read the Bible, God is speaking to us. And so, because we are made in God's image, God can communicate with us.
