The Fan

The fan strode into the stadium and sat down. As the Game progressed, the fan began scanning the crowd. Some "fans" were paying no attention to the Game. Some even ignored the most exciting plays. Realizing that some of these "fans" were not true fans at all, disillusionment began to creep into the fan's heart. Soon, the Game began to lose its appeal. The fan began to wonder if there was even a Game at all. "If so many of these 'fans' don't even care," pondered the fan, "how can the Game be real?"

So the fan left the Game, intending never to return, and disposed of the Rulebook on the way out.

Walking past a park, the fan idly looked up to see a Game in progress. Thrilling plays were happening before his eyes. "How can this be?" Thought the fan, "There are no fans to watch and no scorekeeper. How can the Game be real?" But the Game was real. Even as the fan left the park knowing a genuine Game raged on behind, he knew that the fans' shortcomings had nothing to do with the reality of the Game.

Suddenly, the fan turned and rushed back to the stadium, hoping it was not too late. After thrilling to the most exciting overtime victory ever witnessed, the fan confessed, "Now I see that, no matter how disinterested or hypocritical the fans may be -- or even when there are no fans at all -- the Game continues."
