Washboard Abs

Should I just go ahead and decide I'm going to have "flabs" instead of "abs"? I started some way-too-abs-focused exercises this week and decided that if we're really shooting for "ripped abs," I must be right on track...because I'm pretty sure I tore something in there. It hurts to laugh--and that's just not funny.

But when you think about it, isn't a real washboard all dimply? I think that means I have better than washboard abs. I have an entire washboard body! Hey, maybe "flabs" are in!

Not spiritually, though. First Timothy 4:6 in The Message gives us a reminder: "Exercise daily in God--no spiritual flabbiness, please! Workouts in the gymnasium are useful, but a disciplined life in God is far more so, making you fit both today and forever. You can count on this. Take it to heart."

Living a disciplined spiritual life means, among other things, staying in tune with the Lord through prayer, keeping my nose in his Word and staying plugged in to his people through a good, Bible-believing church. It's serving him no matter what's happening. Every time we do these things, we're doing spiritual crunches. There's fitness there.

So that IS what I'm taking to heart. Maybe taking to stomach, too.
