MythologyBack when I lived as an atheist, I used to compare Christianity with Greek and Roman Mythology. I fancied that, one day, historians would look upon this "mythology" in much the same way we now look at ancient Greek and Roman myths. The fact is, the Judeo-Christian truths as stated in the Bible have already survived much longer than the Greek and Roman civilizations combined. Furthermore, even at the height of those civilizations, few actually believed in those stories as factual accounts as Christians have always viewed the Bible. It was usually viewed as either a source of entertainment or, in the case of the Romans, nationalistic pride. In fact, that was one reason for the persecution of Christians by some Roman emperors in the first three centuries. It was not because they felt their religion threatened, but because they felt that Christians' nonacceptance of Roman myths made them unpatriotic and anti-Roman. The Christians had simply come to believe in the resurrection of Christ as an immovable truth. They could not tolerate a fanciful state religion, even for the sake of national pride (many of the first Christians were Romans themselves). But let's not forget that all Christians are heirs to the Lord's legacy through the ages, going back through the Jewish prophecies of a promised Messiah and beginning with the design and creation of the universe. In this way, faith in the God of the Bible has not only survived any mythology known to man, but also preceded them. All believers in the God of the Bible have believed in One Creator, One Savior and One Truth, not in just a good philosophy by which to live. Though it's also the best way to live on Earth. After all, who better to write the owner's manual than the designer of the product.
