Facts from the Book

I've come to believe in certain facts. That a breach exists between my Maker and me. A breach caused by my misdeeds. That the Savior He sent willingly sacrificed His life in my place to pay the ransom for those misdeeds and heal the breach. That the Savior rose again for my justification--facts all. That makes this "set of beliefs" not exclusively "my set of beliefs."

If you don't share these convictions, I know you can't relate to that. It sounds to you like "I know the Creator and you don't." But if I've come to believe that the Book is the inspired Word of the Maker--a love letter to His people--I have no other choice. I know these facts and I do my best to live by them--not often very successfully--but I can't just pretend I don't know them.

So what those who don't share my belief often hear is "I know and you don't, I'm the saint and you're the heathen, I'm saved and you're damned." But what I'm saying is simply "Please! It says in the Book we're all lost without the Savior. I believe it. Come with me!"

For you, they may be just "my" set of beliefs. But I couldn't live with myself if I didn't try to present the Book as fact. Not as "set of beliefs," not as philosophies, not as something you can take or leave, but fact. Like fire is hot. I can say that when I touch a burning object, it'll burn me. You can say that's "my" belief all you want, but the fact is, when you touch the same object, it'll burn you, too. So the "set of beliefs" is not "mine" any more than "fire is hot" is "your" belief. As Van Morrison would say, it just is.

(By the way, if you know the song referred to, you're a true Van Morrison fan)
