The Victory of Christ and Freedom #409The Heaven's Gate gang was looking for a higher life, spiritual freedom. They found death instead. Suicide is not the path to freedom. Suicide is also not the ultimate step of self determination. Freedom, real freedom, is spiritual. As the apostle Paul says in the Bible: "Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death." (Romans 8:1-2). Now you might say, "Hold it. I'm not in bondage to anyone or anything. How can Christ set me free?" Good question. If real freedom is freedom of spirit, the bondage we are talking about is also inner bondage and turmoil. Paul describes his own inner struggle. "I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man, but I see a different law in the member of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free...?" (Romans 7:22-24). Paul sees that he is a prisoner of sin and evil. He does what he knows he should not do. The struggle is overwhelming. Perhaps this is how it is with you. You are a slave to evil habits You feel like a condemned person. Listen, there is hope. Jesus Christ sets the prisoner free. Turn to Christ. Trust Christ to set you free.
