The Salt of the Earth #73There are all sorts of organizations and causes we might join. Many organizations want certain changes brought about in our society. "Pro Choice" organizations support the right of women to have abortions, while the "Pro Life" movement supports the right of the unborn to enter the world and to have an opportunity to live. And so it goes. The Church of Jesus Christ is also an organization with a cause. It too exists to bring about change in our society. But the Church is unique in that it has a commission from God and from His Son, Jesus Christ. The Church is therefore obliged to "preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15). God has commanded His Church to talk to you and to everyone else about their sin, about the death of Christ on the cross and His resurrection, and about their need to trust in Christ. The objective is to change society by making converts to Christ and by teaching these converts to obey all that Christ commanded. In other words, every individual church must be an evangelistic movement. The goal is to bring men and women into the church and to teach them to live for Christ. In this way, the cause of Christ is advanced. Churches and individual Christians become "the salt of the earth" (Matthew 5:13) and "the light of the world" (Matthew 5:14). You may think that the church and Christians should mind their own business. You may think that the Church has no business trying to "force" its beliefs on you or anyone else. But the Church must be obedient to God. In fact, any church which is not an aggressive evangelistic movement is not worth its salt.
